Our brief was clear: create a journey that would take this high-achieving team out of its comfort zone and into the extraordinary. South Africa—with its dramatic landscapes, world-class food and wine, vibrant cities, and untamed wilderness—was the perfect answer.
Are We There Yet?
After a 20-hour journey, the group arrived at Cape Town International Airport energized by anticipation, if a little weary from the trip. Following a smooth arrival, they were whisked away to the legendary Mount Nelson Hotel, just 20 minutes from the airport.
The remainder of the day was left open for everyone to reset, adjust to the eight-hour time difference, and begin discovering Cape Town at their own pace. Some sampled the region’s remarkable wines; others explored the seaside city or simply soaked in the spectacular views.
Meet the Mother City
Before heading farther afield, we wanted the group to experience the spirit of Cape Town itself. An introductory city tour brought its energy, history, and natural beauty to life—and made believers of everyone onboard.
Cape Town has a saying: “You don’t need a holiday; you need Cape Town.” By the end of the tour, the group wholeheartedly agreed.
From there, we journeyed to the Cape of Good Hope, the dramatic rocky headland at the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula, roughly 30 miles from the city. Lunch was enjoyed along the way, while dinner offered a different kind of discovery: a choice of restaurants reflecting the city’s wonderfully diverse culinary scene.
Fabulous Cape Winelands
No visit to the Western Cape would be complete without time in the Cape Winelands. About an hour outside Cape Town, this breathtaking wine-producing region is a feast for the senses.
The challenge was not whether to visit, but where. We selected the Constantia Wine Route—the closest to Cape Town and home to nine exceptional farms set among the beautiful southern suburbs. The scenery was unforgettable, the wines were exceptional, and the relaxed pace was exactly what the group needed before the adventure shifted gears.
That evening, dinner was planned at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town’s lively hub for dining, entertainment, and shopping.
I Can Hear the Roar
Early the next morning, bags packed, the group returned to Cape Town International Airport for a domestic flight to Hoedspruit, an eco-tourism and safari town nestled at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg.
From there, the adventure moved deep into the wild. The group checked into Kapama River Lodge, a five-star, all-inclusive retreat within the 15,000-hectare Kapama Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Greater Kruger region.
After settling in over fragrant, comforting tea, anticipation was running high. It was time for the first safari.
With the Big Five in mind—elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo—the group set out into the reserve. A sighting of a wild cat can never be guaranteed, and on this first outing luck stayed just out of reach. But the evening was far from lost.
Back at the lodge, the group gathered for a traditional Boma Dinner: an immersive open-air experience within a circular enclosure, lantern-lit and centered around a roaring campfire. Under a sky crowded with stars, guests enjoyed a classic South African braai, with local favorites including boerewors, potjiekos, pap, and game meats such as impala.
The Search Goes On
Day five began before sunrise with another safari in search of the Big Five. This time, the wilderness delivered.
The group spotted a herd of elephants and watched, captivated, as a leopard fixed its attention on a nearby group of impalas. It was one of those quiet, heart-stopping safari moments that no photograph can fully recreate.
After breakfast and a free afternoon at the lodge, everyone headed out once more. The reward: a pair of rhinos playing in a pond.
That night, the group experienced an African bush dinner—an open-air meal in a remote wilderness setting, far from the lodge and beneath the vast African sky. It was a spectacular evening of food, conversation, and connection.
All Good Things Come to an End
The final day arrived far too quickly. No one was ready to leave, but there was still one last morning safari ahead.
The group encountered an aging male lion, driven from his pride—a sobering reminder that nature can be as challenging as it is beautiful. It was a poignant final encounter, and one that stayed with everyone.
Back at the lodge, a sumptuous traditional South African breakfast awaited: maize porridge, fresh bread, and a hearty English-style fry-up. Then it was time, reluctantly, to begin the long trek home.
Few experiences bring a team together quite like stepping into the wild, sharing moments of wonder, and seeing nature on its own terms. For this group, South Africa was more than an incentive trip. It was humbling, exhilarating, and unforgettable—a reward worthy of their remarkable achievements.
